Shared Space

I just finished reading an article on the development of city bike programs in Europe. Personally, I think this a great idea. There are two aspects of the city bike system that I can’t get enough of. First, I think it’s great how improved technology has made the idea of city bikes possible, and secondly, how city bikes create a great sense of community and shared space.
Starting with technology, I think it’s completely unbelievable that improved networking technology has opened a new space for a low technology device. In today’s fast paced world of information and progress, I think we all forget many of the simple technologies. I believe this space for convergent high and low technologies will grow as our need for stronger communities grows.
Anyway, I love the idea of community, and I think it’s great the people a great perspective of themselves and their towns as they adapt more traditional means of transportation.

It’s on my mind

I’ve been searching for a full-time design job for the past six weeks. It’s been frustrating, fun, and paralyzing. I continually read publications toting the value of design in business. With each article I read, I become more and more excited about creating change from within an organization. Nevertheless, I still find it extremely hard to communicate how I might apply my knowledge. Especially, since I don’t know how most organziations are run. For starters, my experience has been with direct product develop, taking an idea and turning into a product. I cherish all of my past experiences, but I find it hard to apply specific learning’s from abstract concepts like design thinking and design application. I think I need to pull out some universal teachings in design that can be applied to business. Hopefully I’ll figure this out.
